That is what keeps us tethered to our enormous cable bill. (sigh) Great insight into an idea I’ve been considering for some time.

Well, in fairness you’re paying to not be advertised too. The cable bills get higher when you add on ad-free services like HBO, Showtime and Cinemax. Network TV/basic cable packages are still very affordable.

And now, even Hulu runs ads, though you can pay to upgrade for ad-free streaming.

Difficult at first, but I’ve learned to love it.

As for the rest, I don’t miss crummy network shows and live events. They’ve become so riddled with ads that they’re unwatchable. Yes, that’s what you’re paying for with cable: the privilege of being advertised to.

Live streaming of big events has gotten more common, and with the addition of Sling and a soccer package my husband doesn’t even have to miss any sports anymore. Sling is a great (and relatively inexpensive) way to stream all the ESPN channels and it works through an app on your computer or through Xbox.

The wife and I have been thinking about this for a long time. Indeed, sports are tough. The NHL Gamecenter package doesn’t get you playoff games, those are carried by NBC. But, assuming your broadcast signals are strong enough, you can get a fancy digital antenna to bring broadcast channels back into your life.
